Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
